Transportation

LEFT: The Turner Turnpike, south of Tulsa, was opened in 1953. Most Tulsans thought the tolls were going to be charged only until the road was paid for! So, the bond issue was voted in, and the State installed 88 miles of road between Tulsa and Oklahoma City at a cost of around $38 million. The turnpike is still there -- and it's not free.

RIGHT: The turnpike from Tulsa to Oklahoma City, with an old Phillips 66 gas station. The gas stations are still there, but they don't look like this.

LEFT: Route 66 was 11th Street in Tulsa -- as shown in this old 1950s photograph, taken around the 800 block of 11th. The Arkansas River in the background.

The last passenger car trip of the Sand Springs Railway (linking downtown to Sand Springs, an adjacent town) was in 1955.
