According to Gene Naron, who sent in this old photograph, The Elephant Trunk Company was started in Tulsa in about 1915 by Frank Goodman. There was a previous store prior to this one, but the photo represents the one located at 420 So. Boston. The store was in business until about 1948 or 1950 when the new bank was built on this site. Gene Naron's father, Jerome Naron, bought the business at that time and the Elephant Trunk was rebuilt at 516 Main Street. In the late 50's Jerome Naron sold the Elephant Trunk to Joe Norton and it is believed to be operating in Tulsa by Mr. Norton's son.
Below is a photograph of the Elephant Trunk as it looked in the 1950s, courtesy of Gene Naron. The store on Main street was owned by Gene Naron's father Jerry and his mother Gertrude, who is shown in the photo selling to customers. This was the new Elephant Trunk Store, which was sold to the Nortons in around 1958. This location eventually became the Coney Island restaurant when new locations were established by the Norton family throughout the city.
