Retail and Commercial Establishments

LEFT: One of the early commercial enterprises in Tulsa was raising cattle.  This 1907 scene was near Tulsa, showing cowboys at work.

This 1930s Christmas ad from Sears shows what it was like downtown, the center of the known universe for Tulsans -- and especially at Christmas, where ten bucks would get enough presents to please the entire family! Clark's, Harrington's, Renberg's, Woolworth's . . . . and nothing was more fun than Christmas shopping in downtown Tulsa, until the early 1960s, when all the major stores began to disappear to the suburbs. A favorite was the Brown-Dunkin Department store, formerly Brown Dunkin Dry Goods. Later, it became J.A. Brown, and eventually Dillard's. Seeing all the great toy pictures in the Brown-Dunkin catalog (below) was almost as much fun as getting the toys.
