Restaurants

Not to be confused with Bishop's Restaurant downtown! Bishop's "Driv-Inn" near downtown Tulsa. Neon lettering must have been expensive, because ordinary words were often truncated in the titles of business establishments. Bishop's Driv-Inn (not to be confused with Bishop's Restaurant) was located on Route 66, at 10th and Boston in Tulsa. It is unclear when it went out of business. Around 1951 or 1952, Bishops Driv-Inn building was used as a car dealership.  Bob Burch recalls that there was a Kaiser automobile on top of the building! One of our paralegals, a native Tulsan who nevertheless really isn't all that old, thinks she remembers it, and claims there were singers on the roof broadasting through microphones to the in-car diners! A former Tulsan, now retired to the farm, sent this memory to us:

I first came to Tulsa in 1953 while still in high school, working as a soda jerk at the Crown Drug Store. The drug store was at 4th and Main, and was just across the street from Brown Duncan.
Regarding the memories of Bishop's drive-in by one of your legal interns, the intern may have been remembering some of the broadcasts from Bishop's by some of the "Big Seven" DJ's of the famous (infamous?) KAKC Radio. I was in broadcasting at the time (at a competing radio station). . . . .

Thanks to Sue Snider for sending in this classic recipe! This is excellent. It is from the now-extinct Bishop's Restaurant in downtown Tulsa. Bishop's used to serve the "Brown Derby" with onion rings.

1 lb. ground beef
1 egg
2 cups chicken broth
1 Tbsp. Worcestershire
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. pepper
1/2 tsp. Mustard

Mix ingredients, adding broth last to give mixture the consistency of soupy meatloaf. Using 1 cup of the mixture for each portion, make thick patties and brown them in oil. Set aside.

Sauce Diablo
1 can Franco beef gravy
1 Tbsp. mustard
1 tsp. A1 Sauce
1 Tbsp. Worcestershire
1/2 cup catsup
1 Tbsp. Margarine

Boil ingredients together for 2 minutes. Drain the meat patties and put in a baking dish. Cover with Sauce Diablo. Bake 30 minutes at 350 degrees; longer if desired.
